The benefits of vector graphics is the lines are smooth, they are resolution independent, you can change them in a lot of ways without making the quality worse, they have smaller file sizes than bitmap graphics, the background is transparent and they can be easily converted to bitmap formats. There is two disadvantages. The disadvantages are they are not typically used for photorealistic images and they are not globally usable.
